This is a situation you don't want to be in:
You buy a $4,500 LED TV. You set it all up, you go online and search forums and AVs websites for hours on end tuning and calibrating your TV to no end.
What usually happens at the end of that horrible day or reconnecting, connecting, isolating/sending/receiving inputs and outputs is: You get a beautiful display that is unique to you.
This did not happen for me. Star Trek on BluRay was used as reference and though bluray passed, game mode would fail. Game mode would pass XBOX 360 Video Streaming judder would fail. This is what happens when you buy a set that is too advanced for you.
I've been calling ISF Calibrators around the bay area to come in and help, as this is their job- tuning high end home theaters. I now have to spend another $2,000 on the Denon AVR 4310IC receiver. Mostly for the video processing, though the audio codecs will now also be tuned with the rest of of the system which is a major plus.
I found a calibrator, Les Holt, who is certified in Denon and Samsung. He has something I don't know. These tools:
Progressive Laboratories CA-5 colorimeter (latest release)
· Progressive Laboratories CA-6X colorimeter
· AV Standards The Visual Standard TVS Pro color comparator
· Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop with custom calibration files
· Avcom PSA37D spectrum analyzer for HDTV reception analysis
· Goldstar OS2090G oscilloscope
· The Gryphon Exorcist audio oscillator
· Customized sound level meter
· Avia, Video Essentials and Digital Video Essentials calibration DVD’s and LD’s
These are the calibration models:
Grey scale calibration (using two independent references)
· Color decoder alignment (to the extent enabled by the display)
· Primary and secondary color gamut adjustments (if enabled)
· Proper adjustment of contrast (white level)
· Proper adjustment of brightness (black level)
· Geometry correction
· Proper adjustment of electronic focus
· Proper adjustment of mechanical (optical) focus
· Analysis of room setup and conditions from both visual and auditory perspectives
· Consultation re best choice of equipment for budget and viewing/listening habits
· Optimization of equipment and set up
· Proper alignment of multi-channel sound systems
· Recommended test DVD’s, CD’s, SACD’s, DVD-A’s
· Recommendations comparing cable TV with satellite TV versus over-the-air (OTA) reception
· Feasiblity analysis of over-the-air (OTA) reception of HDTV
And to keep it interesting, here is what the new remote looks like: (Yes...LCD button screen)

We only had you for a year refurbished 1909- you will be missed.

We only had you for a year refurbished 1909- you will be missed.
Lately, I've been tuned into the PC. Since I'm waiting for the new LEDTV to arrive, I didn't want to really play console games when I could be having a better experience with patience.
Assassins Creed 2 world is completely alive. It is believable, beautiful and each villa tells a story. It's the sort of game that teaches you without you knowing it. Each historical landmark unfolds a tale of non-fiction relevance to the city and why it is famous, as well as how it contextually takes part of the story you're experiencing. It is something extremely rare, even more so in an action/open world type of game. I'm not quite sure what category to put this game in, though, I do know it is an important leap from things I've played before.
Sometimes, I wondered how Bill Gates and Microsoft stays the powerhouse corporation of the world. I instantly think of how Microsoft keeps people playing a multiplatform game on the XBOX 360 despite the fact the PlayStation 3 online is free or the PC version which is not only free online but cheaper and vastly improved graphics at much higher resolutions. There are also other differences, depending on the software. The answer:
Achievements
Achievements are destroying parts of the gaming experience. I've also found myself victim to this system, though, not to a fault. An old friend of mine, will only play games for achievements. I mean this kid will buy, rent, steal awful pieces of software so he can show off his growing gamerscore. The amount of amazing games that have been ignored due to this system is beyond ridiculous. This is the true powerhouse of Microsoft thinking:
The ability to sell pieces of software that are absolutely pieces of shit to an idiot consumer. I've heard people say, "I don't to play if I don't have something to show for it."
The experience, art, soul- completely lost.
The PC, though, is sometimes an archaic form of gaming, not because of platform, but because of accessibility. There are things on here that just aren't available anywhere else. Yes, MMOs are a big part of that culture, and though they are evolving, the grind lives. AION, a Korean MMO built on Crysis' CryEngine is a beautiful game that cannot escape the fate of its predecessors.
When not in Areia, which is often as of now, I've been in the little mining city of Torchlight. Torchlight can be summed up as an archaic, dungeon crawling, loot grabbing run of the mill left click go right click attack game. Though, all of these pieces, perfectly executed with amazing artistry and gallons of blood galore create create one of my favorite games of the year.
I've never felt so much of how I felt playing PC games in Jr. High/High School as I do playing Torchlight. And it isn't only the nostalgia that keeps me coming back to it- it is a fresh new experience on its own. Dungeons are randomly generated, talent trees are expertly crafted, and classes each feel like a separate game. It is the only game that I cannot wait to try again as a separate class I've played all year.
Thinking about all this, writing about it, I don't know why I didn't know earlier in my life that I should be taking part of this. I know people who write about it like they are me. It takes a sort of sacrifice to be alone in this, ask my social life, he's about to hang himself. You can't really have it both ways.
I guess I should be used to having parts of my identity stolen.

Things can get a little weird when you try to put the "High" back in your life. The right way, anyway.
OK, maybe not the traditional "right" way, but hey, shit is cool.
The game I've been waiting for all year is finally out. It's so good I had to buy the Digital Deluxe Edition for the PC and check out for the 360 too. I know it's a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate and the right way to play that is PC...but...150+ hours without any achievements or connection to the world? I'll save that for Diablo and StarCraft. And even then, we'll have online connectivity via whatever form of upgraded Battlenet Blizzard comes to.
Dragon Age: Origins is by the best game of the year and is sadly going to be overshadowed by Modern Warfare 2, but I feel good that there's still a niche that separates the classes.
In celebration for the PC version, it was time to upgrade to the G19:

Speaking of High-End...
I've noticed a small amount of greyscale and banding on my Sharp Aquos, which is a 52' in my living room. This is my main TV, though we have a Panasonic Kuros 42' in the bedroom, but this is more of a bedroom movie TV.
I spent a full day of reading debating between the Samsung 8000 series and the 8500 series. Mostly because there is a $1,000 difference which is a lot of money when you're comparing $3,000 to $4,100. Both extremely nice 55' TVs, just one being much better than the other.
As CNet claims, "The best LCD ever made" (it is also a LED TV), I figured the extra money would be worth it in the long run.

Some mother fuckers always trying to ice skate uphill.
Christ. I mean, a guy comes in here against every, every instinct of privacy and self-reliance he has and what do you do? What do you do, huh? You send him off on the street to score smack, is that what you do...?
It's an old habit. I spent my life trying not to be careless. Women and children can be careless, but not men.
Friendship and money...oil and water.
I see these mothers treating their children like shit. Yelling at them in public, hitting them. Leaving them in cars. In strollers while they look at DVDs. Fathers leaving for work while the grandma takes care of the kids. He comes home and passes out on the couch while the kids are asleep or sleeping in the backyard in fear of coming into the house. I finally begin to understand, almost everyone I know now, will be who I know now forever.
I work my whole life. I don't apologize to take care of my family, and I refused to be a fool, dancing on the string held by all those big shots. I don't apologize, that's my life.
(Yes. This a metaphor for being unsafe. For being reckless. For being safe. For being stupid, arrogant, weird, smart, stupid. For being all those horrible and wonderful things at the same time. Vulgar and sweet. Mean to my friends and 20's to dealers. Robbed on the street by thugs, yet giving away the real tech gear to friends and family. Most of all, a metaphor for originality.)
But...
The strings. These strings. I'm afraid once they are cut I will turn into one of you.

For anyone interested in the PSP GO, here it is:

It comes with everything but the dock. 16GB flash built-in, and has a M2 slot for expansion. I'm pretty sure there is a 16GB M2 available for around 70. You can get the lower size version for much less.
I've been part of the circuit lately. Net is back in jail for failure of restitution fees. He had borrowed around $4,0000 and went on vacation to Denver. He was stopped there and found out there were multiple warrants issued for his arrest. Birju and I have had to cover his shifts at the downtown store so my dad isn't alone there.
My dad warned me years ago friends were the worst people to do business with. Especially friends that take the drugs they happen to sell. I've pretty much stopped the entire business aspect of our relationships due to it, and everything has been cool since then.
I've become part of the circuit. Especially since it's so near the downtown store. If you don't know what that is, go watch an episode of The Wire. I don't want to spell out how and who I worked it and go directly to jail.
It's cheap, and better than I imagined. OC's, 7.5Vic's, (I dislike 10 Norcs), Val's, ect. It is an outdoor pharmacy and the rush I get from it is like something I've never experienced before.
We are now waiting for Net to get back. John, the "Main Man", and I talked about me coming to work for him full time and the amount of money he would have to pay me. It simply isn't enough. I could work at one of our stores and make more money in a month and buy all the tech gear I want in a year. When you do something like that as long as I did, you learn the consumer gets the best product, not the reviewer.
Outdated firmwares, broken parts, incomplete development cycles- I could go on but it's a complete mess. Right now, kids are writing for every tech blog out there. Jessica Chabot is a model who reads from a teleprompter. I mean...our love has turned into a massive business/corporation.
It's OK. We have the circuit. The girls. The friends. The undercovers, the watchmen, but most of all,
We have the high in the palm of our chests.
Most importantly, is when Net gets back, I have the option of taking over the business or taking my chances with Audio Engineering work for Sony PlayStation.
Strong for my family, or strong for my career.
Did pops, in being strong for the family, ever feel like he was losing his family?
...But Michael. You can never lose your family.

If you don't know, when I was younger I was an insane comic nerd. I have Uncanny X-Men #1. It is worth over $250,000. I will never let it go. I am also a huge comic nerd now, as I don't party much and spend hours reading weekly.
Batman Noir, Detective series is my favorite comic series of all time. Neil Gaiman's "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader" is also fantastic.
Batman: Arkham Asylum, very similar to the graphic novel/series, is by far the best game of the year. It is Zelda, Castlevania and more taken to an entirely new level. This is why we take part of gaming art.

Oh how much there is to say about QT's masterpiece homage to Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Westerns hidden in a World War 2 movie...Needless to say, if you didn't like Inglourious Basterds you don't like film. You like things that are printed on film. Things that try to be the works of art that created film. Things that cater to your needs of not thinking about what you're watching. And hey, that's OK, after all, to most people, film is entertainment.
I have many friends, almost all of them, can't differentiate, but after talking to them, they can understand the difference without me saying much. They do it themselves. I'm happy to know the gap is not as big as it used to be. I'm not claiming that I know it all. What I do know, is that I analyze every film I see, and Andrew and I have both seen more than every film student friend I have put together individually.
I remember my high school night dragging friends to see Lynch..
Anyways, Inglourious Basterds was a great way to end the summer.
We have one more vacation. Seattle from the 3rd-8th for the Penny Arcade Expo. Why the fuck does Arkham Asylum, Dissidia and Metroid Prime Trilogy have to come out tomorrow?
I've been fucking playing Shadow Complex for almost 2 weeks (not that it's not great), but can't you fucking PR idiots coordinate and get into the industry so you can talk to marketing to release your game during a drought?
AA is going to stomp on these games sales wise, in the US anyway. Awful marketing for the other two. The reviews have been posted for weeks, along with Japanese releases and Demos so it's not like the fucking games weren't finished, either.
Yeah, I know, more shit that doesn't involve drama.
My Grandfather died recently. I didn't go to the funeral. He was old and being taken care of by various family members. I didn't talk to him. I don't have a family. I know I will make a new, more important one, or somebody have the Big Fish conversation with my Dad. Maybe I'll know what they were like at any points in their lives. I don't know anything about them. They don't want to know anything about me. That's OK. I don't believe blood is the answer to anything (Major True Blood theme, eh eh).
Anyways, after he died, they found a journal he had been writing in since he was a teenager. It still isn't translated. But we got to a part about how much he appreciated and loved all of us, I was specifically mentioned, even though our family is torn in a way where no one ever says it to each other. He went on about how proud he was of his 5 sons and 2 daughters. Something white people don't understand, and never will, the complex intricacies of a family that comes here and raises first generation kids in a new country. I couldn't imagine what it was like then.
So...You know what I really love? When someone posts an LJ entry about how they haven't posted in a long time and how that makes them feel better. Like writing about your life so you can someday tell your family when you're old is a bad thing? Clearly, you have some Narcissistic issues, been using things to get attention, not anything else.
How many things from the past have we forgotten as we've been growing up? And now we have a way to document it. Like a memoir in the making. It doesn't need to be important, or published, or read to the world.
It just needs to be yours.

Most of all, it is one of the best films I've ever seen.

When people play a video game, watch a film, view a piece of art (in any form), or hear a song, different things happen to each individual.
What I've been learning is you can have someone listen to a song or watch a film that is so prominent to what they are going through and they will listen and they'll love that particular piece of art or hate it, without understanding why.
When I was in high school I would listen to songs and lyrics would pop out and apply to my life so directly, it would directly affect the decisions I would make later in my life.
The thing is, the more people the more I realize that people who love certain forms of art don't understand it, don't attempt to and don't care. So many people don't care about understanding why they like something and don't even attempt to try and understand because- it doesn't matter. It then becomes prominent somehow and we have The Jonas Brothers and Taylor Swift taking over the music industry and point the figure at someone else.
How does Stephenie Meyer's Mormon book about abstinence become a phenomenon among teenagers who fuck for sport? How does Grand Theft Auto become used as a target for broken home adolescents' yearn for violence? How does Let the Right One In get remade a year later with more eyes on than the original with the excuse of "I don't like reading subtitles." And I don't even want to know how bad it will be lost in translation. Fuck you Matt Reeves.
Understanding a medium is what differentiates art from entertainment. It is important.
"It's not about money, it's about sending a message."
-Johnathon and Christopher Nolan, read by Heath Ledger, playing as, of all people, The Joker.
I've graduated with a degree in Audio Engineering and I've learned so much, but above all, being a part of it showed me so many negative issues about this industry that, like in high school, it will directly affect the decisions I will be making now.
It is the most frustrating problem I've ever faced, and I have no choice but to go along with it.
I am unimportant in the world. And like most unimportant people, who even though are the majority, nothing I can say or do will change anything. Even me writing this doesn't change anything, just like how watching anti-smoking adds make people smoke or Super Size Me makes you want McDonalds,
Above all, if you don't understand something, at least acknowledge you can't differentiate and stop pretending. Don't repeat what someone says because you think they're right, do it because you understand why it may or even may not be right.
"The world won't listen."

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is not only one of the all-time best Fantasy movies ever made, it is more mature and darker than Cuaron's Azkaban and more serious than any of the previous entires.
Six movies later and Harry has found its Empire Strikes Back.
..Only better.

I think it's really important to remember that Sacha Baron Cohen is a journalist. Or a method journalist, something original at the moment. Borat and Bruno are not films, they are very inventive documentaries. The point of them is to shed light and be outrageously funny at the same time. Still, it isn't as good as Borat, but Bruno never was.
What disappointed me was he strayed so far away from the evil of Hollywood and lead us more toward middle America's intolerance with gays and Gay-Bes, (Paula Abdul is exempt. Talking about human rights while using a Mexican human being as a chair is priceless) which we already know has not gotten better and is equally idiotic as it was in Borat- if not worse. We get it. What people don't know is about all the awful things that go on in the fashion industry, all the girls that do porn pretending to be models, all the skin burning from makeup after years of facial abuse, the pressure of weight loss, the promise of fame, but most of all the idiocy of thinking it is not only hard, but a real job (this list can go on for a long, long time), all the reasons I am forever afraid to have a daughter because I am a male and have no idea how to stray her away from that culture which infatuates people. It isn't and it is absolutely detrimental to a human being physically and mentally. And this is something that Bruno could've done! I don't hate all of this because it exists, or the fact that I've always had negative experiences with these people, I hate it because I know someday I will have somehow have to explain to my kids.... I could OD before that so lets knock on wood. Or a model.
And I don't mean my friends who sometimes model- I mean real wishful thinking models naked on websites or actual runway models, ect. We have a friend Mary who lived in Mulan as a runway model and she has similar stories and even she felt bad for some of the models in the movie- she shouldn't. If you've seen it, you should understand, this model is a fucking idiot beyond idiots. This is not something that should be accepted because it is favored as glamorous. And I can imagine giving this speech to a young girl and I know it will affect her the same way it does everyone else. Who cares, right?
I love Devil Wears Prada, and I love where Meryl Streep says,
"Oh, don't be silly - Everyone wants this. Everyone wants to be *us*."
In the best news of the year ever, Harry Potter is 24 VS 1 at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and I love David Yates as much as I do Alfonso Cuaron (though I'd love to see what he could do with grown up Harry). We have 2 days left.
...2 days...we wait.
Anxiously.
Very, very anxiously.
UPDATE:
Half-Blood Prince 98%
40 V 1
...Harry Potter, Disneyland, and the Entourage.

"It's 1988 now, Margaret Thatcher is entering her third term of office and talking confidently of an unbroken Conservative leadership well into the next century. My youngest daughter is seven and the tabloid press are circulating the idea of concentration camps for persons with AIDS. The new riot police wear black visors, as do their horses, and their vans have rotating video cameras mounted on top. The government has expressed a desire to eradicate homosexuality, even as an abstract concept, and we can only speculate as to which minority will be the next legislated against. I'm thinking of taking my family and getting out of this country soon, sometime over the next couple of years. It's cold and it's mean-spirited and I don't like it here anymore.
Goodnight America. Goodnight Home Service (Homeland Security), (Goodnight Patriot Act) and V for Victory.
Hello the Voice of Fate and V for Vendetta."
- Alan Moore
Northampton, March 1988
It's the 4th of July, and I know I should keep this somewhere safe.
*The original context applied only to the year 1988 in England, in which Homeland Security, The Patriot Act (and much, much more) were not applied like they are now (two decades later), in our country. It has escalated our home to an even scarier, more controlling and more threatening place to live. The original title from Alan Moore was "Goodnight England," where, to my knowledge, he still resides now.
It's been almost 8 years since 2001 where people threw rocks at my families' cars and my dad was still stopped at the airport when we left for the East Coast. When questioning why he was stopped he was told it was because he was wearing "baggy pants."

Between all the games that've come out in the last few months there was one that I've been waiting for for a very, very long time.
For some reason, American studios cannot fathom developing a real western, or even spaghetti western for that matter. Just another thumbs up to Rockstar for possibly closing the gap between Super Mario bullshit and Art in gaming. Red Dead Redemption is on its way.
Until then, put aside inFamous, Red Faction, Prototype, Fight Night 4, Ghostbusters, BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger and a handful of other great games that have come out this year for one reason:

The McCall brothers are coming.
Along with a Michael Mann gangster movie...
Plus, I needed an excuse to use the new mouse:

UPDATE: DO NOT watch the Public Enemies in theaters, the new Michael Mann movie, it is a waste of support towards fueling is ego. Yes, I love Heat and Miami Vice but that might've been one of the worst old school gangster movies I've ever seen.
Yeah, M. Night might have an ego too, but at least when he puts out something good it hits hard. Sixth Sense, Signs (which I love), Unbreakable, The Village, even Lady in the Water had powerful moments. With the exception of the awful "The Happening" his ego is backed by emotional impact and great story telling. You may hate it, but there there is nothing else like his shit. Here's hoping to The Last Airbender. M. Night and Dev Patel. I support the Indian crew!
You will gain nothing from Public Enemies except a $10 nap, which more than half the theater experienced- including Andrew.
This is an attempt to take advantage of our obsession with romanticized crime and gangster stories. It is taking advantage of people and backed by a name so we're lead to believe it is something better than it actually is. Three names actually, Depp, Bale and Mann. Absolute bullshit.
And it is bad. Really really bad. If you thought American Gangster took advantage of this idea and had pacing and character building/relationship issues, be ready for a complete fucking mess. Even his firefights are off target here, which is where Mann has shined when his problematic storytelling takes the backseat.
Spend money on Moon. It was a $5 million dollar production and it isn't nearly close to making it back. It needs to be supported. It was why I posted the clip in a previous entry. Movies like that don't come around often and it was writer/director Duncan Jones (David Bowie's son) first movie. It is SciFi, powerful and most of all an original work of art, even if it does borrow from classics. Just know that he isn't borrowing to steal, he's borrowing because it heavily influenced him and we've drifted a long ways from that.
We've gone from Blade Runner to Transformers 2. Someone can tell you a million times Michael Bay is a complete fucking faggot and yet everyone goes to see this. I don't know why and I don't care. It isn't like there aren't fun SciFi or action movies out there that are actually good, Star Trek was a perfect example of that.
Rotten Tomatoes:
Star Trek= 95%
Transformers 2= 20%
And every time I try to tell someone that they either say, "Critics are idiots they don't like anything" or they say, "I heard it was good."
Well you heard from someone who can't differentiate between Novels and coloring books and critics don't hate everything. They only hate movies that fucking suck. It isn't like they are going out of their way to bash shit just because they can (for the most part, there are still Anton Ego's out there), they are trying to push the general public towards supporting films that are original, or art, or thoughtful, or inspiring, ect.
And movies aren't subjective. They are absolutely objective.
Art is subjective. If you can't differentiate, well, ask a movie critic. Maybe they'll stop bashing and help you out. (Don't ask film school kids, I don't know any who watch any movies).
Speaking of amazing movies, you could just wait for the amazing-mind blowing-best-movie-everness of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince...
Totally not joking either, I cannot wait!!!
PS- Have you seen the Bruno trailer with someone who's life is either revolving around and/or in fashion/modeling industry and they laugh? It's...a complete paradox.
If you've ever heard Sacha Cohen talk about Bruno it is his way to show the world of how evil, arrogant, awful, (Add a million negative adjectives) the fashion/modeling industry is.
Fuck oil. You want to know what makes the world evil?
The people in it.
And in no way do I consider myself a "Good" person. I am awful. But, I definitely do not enforce the ideologies of those portrayed in fashion/modeling world, or the fuel the hate religious people or most Americans put onto others, or ignorance, ect. At the least I read books, something no one I know does. (Other than Devin.)
...At the least I don't tell people "I heard Transformers 2 was good" or they heard "Insert game name" was gay without seeing it, playing it, demoing it or reading one of the million reviews posted daily.
If you ignorantly hate things or enforce absolutely fucking awful ideologies, or can't differentiate between The Dark Knight and Watchmen (Seriously, Zack Snyder is a faggot) go read a fucking book and learn something. I seriously feel like a parent on a daily basis.
Or don't, and continue keeping things the way they are. Seriously, the world will just fix itself! No worries!
I'm gonna go jump off a tall building. A really tall one.
...So a transformer that combines with multiple transformers to make a giant, more fucking stupid transformer, won't be able to catch me.

Sometimes, even if the finished product isn't perfect, there is a moment within the product that speaks not only for itself, but for more than the entirety, and to us.
My phones dead, sorry guys you won't get anything from me until after tomorrow.

A lot happened while I was gone. I love San Francisco with everything in me, it's where I will always want to be. It is summed up with this quote:
I hope that the worlds turns, and that things get better. But what I hope most of all is that you understand what I mean when I tell you that, even though I do not know you, and even though I may never meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you, I love you. With all my heart, I love you.
This city is the only place the quote rings true without any sort of bullshit filling in the gaps.
I can approach a girl or a boy, I can touch them and I can take a picture, ask for a cigarette and say I hope the rest of your day was as good as the moment we shared.
That would be our moment, and that's all it would be. Nothing more, nothing less.
I promise you this, a little's enough.
I will never go to LA alone again. It is a place full of denial, hate, false justifications, and rationalizations.
The world ends with you.
PS- If you know a God's Girl, push her and the "Super Stud" fag enough to fuck her off the tallest mother fucking bridge or building near you.
It would push us one step further to a better world.
Goodnight Earth. Goodnight bigger than life,
and V for Victory

I'm in LA until Sunday night, spending most of my time at E3. It's an hour drive there, pay to park, hour back and paying for the car rental.
I've played a ton of games, watched even more and almost everything has surpassed my expectations.
I finished the God of War 3 demo so excited, then popped and moved on. I met the mayor of LA and Ken Kutaragi.
There's just so much excitement amongst groups of people and fun in playing the games.
I play home by myself all the time, read alone, go to the movies by myself and I love it.
I literally was starry eyed when I saw the Last Guardian.
Stardust. Far away from everyone and everything.
If only, I wish, I couldn't, maybe.
At the end of time, a moment will come when just one man remains. Then the moment will pass. Man will be gone. There will be nothing to show that we were ever here... but stardust.
I keep thinking I can do things I can't. Then I do them again.
